With the prevalence of psychic readers, mediums, astrologers, and tarot readers advertising on social media, there has recently been a boom in psychic frauds trying to make a quick buck by scamming users with false advertising or impersonating real psychic accounts.

If you frequently use psychic services, or even if you’re a first timer, you might be vulnerable to being duped by these scammers. We believe in empowering our readers with information to make the best decisions possible, so in this guide we’re going to take a look at how to spot a psychic scammer, and how to protect yourself.

The Signs of a Scammer

In this internet age, it can be hard to tell if someone is a scammer looking to take your money, or the real deal. Here are some of the signs you might be speaking with a scammer.

They Reached Out to You

Lately there’s been a rise in people being scammed on social media sites like Instagram, by those impersonating accounts of real psychic readers. They receive a message from a psychic reader that says something like “I was called to reach out to you to give a psychic reading.” This is the number one sign of a scammer. Psychic readers will not reach out to you personally to offer you a reading. They have their own websites or booking pages to schedule readings, and you have to go to these yourself to book your reading.

Their Username is Slightly Off

If you receive such a message, you should know automatically that this is a scammer, but another way to tell is by checking the username. Often, impersonator accounts will use almost exactly the same username and profile pic as your favorite psychic, but with extra period signs or underscores added. They will also most likely have their account on private.

They’re Asking Too Many Questions

Sometimes, psychic readers advertise normally, without impersonating another reader, but don’t possess any real psychic gifts at all. If you’re speaking to a psychic reader through a psychic network, or even booked one on social media, you could still be in danger of being scammed. One way to tell immediately if your psychic isn’t the real deal is by how many questions they ask you.

A psychic should be able to start giving you insight on your situation very quickly, with only the smallest amount of detail from you, like your name, the name of any person of interest you might be inquiring about, and birth chart information: date, time, and place of birth, along with naturally inquiries such as what you’d like to know. If they begin asking you for more details regarding your life or that of the person you are asking about, they might be a scammer. In a psychic reading, you should be the one asking the questions, and they the ones giving answers.

They’re Giving Very Generic Advice

Cold reading is a learned skill that many people use to pose themselves as psychics. Through asking questions or simply making guesses based on microexpressions or random details, tone, etc. They can seemingly answer questions about your life, but in reality they are making guesses and assumptions. If the advice they are giving sounds like it could apply to anybody, and doesn’t include many details that are personal to you, you could be talking to a cold reader.

How to Protect Yourself from a Scammer

There are a few ways to make sure that you are speaking to a real psychic, so you don’t waste your money on scammers.

1. Do Your Research

Before giving your money to a psychic, make sure that you have done some research on the psychic, and the platform they are working on. If you can find positive feedback from other clients, you are likely speaking with a legit psychic.

2. Ask Detailed Questions

Generic questions get generic answers. Make sure that when you reach out to a psychic, you have a detailed question in mind, and continue to ask follow up questions throughout your session that are specific to your situation. Often, users will complain that their psychic is a scammer because of the generic advice they received, when they asked questions that were too generic to receive anything but. You don’t have to divulge a lot of information about yourself in order to ask questions that are specific to you.

3. Use Your Discernment

If you get an “off” feeling during any psychic reading, trust your gut and end the reading as quickly as possible. Note that this does NOT include receiving answers you don’t want to hear – in fact, this could actually be a sign you are speaking to an authentic psychic. If everything sounds exactly like what you want, it could be a scam – or you could be lucky. You should be able to tell by intuition between the two.

4. Use a Legitimate Psychic Network

The best way to stay protected against psychic scammers is by using a legitimate psychic network that has screening processes in place to find your psychic. You’ll have a larger roster of psychics to choose from, from all over the world, and plenty of feedback from other users verifying the ability of the psychics. As stated earlier, choosing a psychic based on the feedback of past clients could mean the difference between a real reading and a waste of time and money.

Final Thoughts

Luckily, all of the sites we review have high standards when it comes to accepting applicants as part of their ranks. There are varying levels of screening processes that include a video demonstration of their abilities, interviews with psychic managers, and a registration fee – all to keep you protected from psychic scams. On top of that, most of them offer 100% Satisfaction Guarantee, so you can try psychic readings risk free.
