Tarot Reading: Myths & Facts

Tarot has been growing in popularity lately, and it’s easy to see why. More and more, people are empowering themselves to take their destiny into their own hands by exploring their own subconscious and possibilities for the future with the help of spiritual advisors like psychic mediums and tarot readers.

But with mainstream popularity comes a lot of misconceptions. When there’s a lot of information out there, how do you know what’s real and what isn’t?

At Psychics-Reading.com we’re dedicated to connecting you with legitimate psychics, tarot readers, and spiritual advisors and bringing you legitimate information about the art of tarot reading and other psychic craft. In this article you’ll learn what’s fact and what’s fiction about tarot reading, with knowledge from real-life tarot readers and students of the tarot.

Fiction: Tarot Can Tell the Future

Let’s just get this one out of the way right away. There is no such thing as a fixed future; you are the co-creator of your destiny alongside the universe. While there are methods of divination that can predict events that may happen in the future, this is more along the line of fortune telling, which tarot is not.

If you encounter a tarot reader who claims to be able to tell you exactly what is going to happen in the future with their cards, you may be on the way to a bad psychic reading.

Fact: Tarot Can Tell the Present

If you are ever feeling stuck in a situation, unable to recognize your own thoughts and feelings about something, or unsure how to proceed, tarot is a great tool to help you move forward. The cards have an uncanny way of telling you what you already know, but weren’t able to express – even to yourself.

Tarot cards are great for seeing the bigger picture and bringing clarity to the situations in your life. Even just approaching a tarot reader for a general reading can help you recognize areas of your life that you might want to be putting extra effort into.

Fiction: All Tarot Readers Are Psychics

While tarot reading does often fall under the realm of psychic readings, there isn’t necessarily a lot of psychic ability needed to be able to read tarot. Anybody can learn the cycles of The Fool’s Journey and be able to put together a story in a tarot spread, even if they don’t have any inherent psychic ability.

Many psychics do use tarot as a tool to enhance their readings, it’s true, but it isn’t a prerequisite to being able to read tarot.

Fact: Tarot Readers Are Intuitive

What tarot relies on more than psychic ability is intuition – which every person possesses to some degree, and can hone over time like any other skill.

Intuition is important because, obviously, no two tarot readings are alike. Even if the same cards were pulled for two separate readings, the story would be different because the perspective is different for each person. The reader has to use their intuition in order to connect a story between the person they are reading cards for, and the cards that are pulled; often with absolutely no prior knowledge of the person they are reading for.

Fiction: Tarot Cards Have Hard and Fast Meanings

While it’s true that there is a general structure to the Rider Waite Smith style of tarot cards – which is the structure most readers mean when they say tarot, although there are others out there – and each card has a general energy and archetype that it conveys, rote memorization of card meanings alone will not make anyone a tarot reader.

As mentioned above, intuition and storytelling are crucial aspects of tarot reading.

Fact: The Reader is the Key Component in a Tarot Reading

The reader you choose is most important when getting a tarot reading. The cards have no power on their own, but when they are interpreted through the reader’s eyes, they take on meaning and turn into the magical tools for divining we know them to be.

Every reader has their own style of reading and their own experience and relationship to the cards. Some readers like to read with spreads, while some use a more conversational style of pulling cards. Some shuffle wildly, some neatly, some not at all. Most tarot readers can read a situation for you with any deck of cards you put before them, not just the traditional Rider Waite Smith deck. There are as many tarot reading styles as there are card combinations.

Be sure to put some time in to researching and receiving the best tarot reading possible, as blindly choosing a reader based only on popularity or availability can lead to a dud of a reading that will leave you disappointed, out of money, and just as confused as before.

Fiction: You Must be “Chosen” To Be a Tarot Reader

There are a lot of wild stories about how one can become a tarot reader, including that you must be gifted your first deck, or else harm will befall you, or all of your readings will be untrue, or other such nonsense. Others believe you must be taught by a tarot master or have a hereditary connection to the tarot in order to be a reader.

Obviously, this is nonsense. Tarot is an Italian card game turned divination method based on Hermetic principles and ideas heavily “borrowed” from Jewish mysticism, with some Jungian archetypes and symbolism thrown in for good measure – not a closed practice.

Fact: Anyone Can Learn Tarot - Just Be Thorough!

As you’ve learned, tarot can be learned by anybody. If you’re learning it to be able to tell the future, you might be disappointed, but if you’re learning it to be able to bring a level of clarity and insight to your life, and the lives of others, just make sure you’re not cutting any corners, and learn its history as well.

Or if learning tarot isn’t for you – and there’s a LOT to learn – reach out to a tarot reader now with a renewed sense of where their abilities lie, what they can and can’t tell you, and how they can help you live your best life.
