Psychic ability and its existence has been hotly contested for about as long as people have been giving psychic readings. The general consensus in the scientific community is that psychic ability doesn’t exist – but this close minded skepticism is a fairly recent trend in science and psychology.

The problem with the scientific community’s refusal to accept psychic ability as truth is that they’re seeing it in the wrong light. Many people – including people who believe in psychic abilities – think that psychics can read minds or tell the future exactly as it will happen, which is a reductionist view that sets the art back in terms of being taken seriously.

Any legitimate practicing psychic will tell you that there is no fixed future, and they cannot read your thoughts. Anybody who claims that they can, is likely a scammer. What a psychic can do is sense energies, make predictions which may or may not come true based on the person’s subsequent actions, and tap into preternatural senses that every person possesses, but not every person can access.

If you’re on the fence about whether to receive a psychic reading, this article will take a look at the relationship between psychic abilities and science to help you make a decision.

What is Parapsychology?

Parapsychology is also known as “PSI” and is the study of psychic phenomena that can’t be described by the laws of science as they are at this moment in time; as we know, new information is always being discovered in science.

Early psychologists like Freud studied parapsychology, mostly as a way to expose psychic frauds, which were rampant in the early 20th century with the rise in popularity of Occultism.

More recently, a psychologist named Daryl Bem published findings that others in the community thought might be a hoax, because they contained positive evidence for psychic abilities. The study was backed up by another parapsychologist named Etzel Cardeña who concluded that existing analyses were supportive of the PSI hypothesis, and defends the legitimacy of the subject.

What this essentially means is that there is scientific evidence for psychic activity – even if it is not a large amount. PSI research is held to a much higher standard than other areas, because of its supposed impossibility; which means that any positive findings could prove its existence all the more.

Science vs. Magic

The difference between science and magic really is a negligible one if you take a look at it closely. Every process that can be described by science was once thought of as a form of magic before there was a scientist to give it a scientific description. Perhaps it wasn’t always necessarily called magic, but magic can be thought of simply as unexplained phenomena.

It is perhaps an unimaginative world where only things that can be explained scientifically exist. In all of history, we have never lived in such a world, and any scientist would tell you so. For example, scientists know that dark matter exists, but they don’t actually know what it is.

The urge to describe something scientifically, even if it is to debunk it, is to possess a curiosity about the mysteries of the world and attempt to learn them and share these findings with others.

Sounds a lot like what psychics do, too.

Skill vs. Science

Psychic readers perhaps wouldn’t call their abilities scientific. Psychic abilities are often innate, but most people have to practice and hone them over the years to be able to use them well enough to help other people.

There are plenty of fields of study, however, where the unknown is the baseline and a true answer can’t be pinned down. We won’t get into the complicated theories of Quantum Theory and String Theory here, but these are respected scientific theories.

Quantum Mechanics and String Theory both involve phenomena that are similar to the paranormal and parapsychological. They simply can’t be explained by science as we understand it, now. In Quantum Mechanics, for example, there is a phenomenon known as quantum entanglement.

What is Quantum Entanglement?

Also called “spooky action at a distance” by Albert Einstein, quantum entanglement is “the idea that the fates of tiny particles are linked to each other even if they’re separated by long distances.” This is a respected scientific idea that shares a lot of similarities with ideas held by those who believe in psychic abilities.

For instance, many who believe in the concept of “twin flames” equate the quantum entanglement phenomenon to them. Somewhere in the universe, one particle became two, and those particles may be separated by time, space, maybe even dimension, but they are still very much linked.

If spooky action at a distance has been observed on tiny particles, could it be true of more ephemeral things like emotions, intuition, or second sight as well?

Why does it matter?

In the end, it all comes down to what you believe. If you go into a psychic reading with the understanding that any information they give about the future can be changed by your action or inaction, a psychic experience could be transformative or not, depending on what you do with that information.

If you’re a believer, and take the session with the psychic to heart and do all you can to assure the outcome they predicted, looking for ways to manifest your heart’s desire, the probability of it coming true will be higher.

If you’re a skeptic, and don’t take positive steps in the direction the psychic gave you, then nothing will happen – ironically, making your own prediction come true. Who’s the psychic now?

It matters because it is important to know the basics of what psychics can do – and what they can’t – in order to not be taken advantage of by a scammer. But can there really be that many people out there lying about their belief in possessing psychic abilities? And that many people lying about the results they received?
